Dry January has taken on an elevated meaning. It started a couple years ago, but now, this topic has really ramped up. Everywhere on the news and on social media, I keep hearing how alcohol consumption is way down- in some age groups, its dropped off by as
much as 10% for booze and 8% for wine.
The chatter is that it’s about more than ‘Dry January’ (or for
some, it’s a ‘Damp January’.)
2 biggest reasons for the cutbacks- Health + Money.
Yes, inflation has made social drinking much more expensive.
And we have always known it can challenge our health. Why is ‘Sober Curious’ or ‘Mindful Drinking’ now a really BIG thing?
Well, trends do happen. Some say it’s the rebound of
over-consumption during lock down. Many claim that since other types of drugs are now more accessible and acceptable, that drinking is out and smoking and ingesting are in. (no endorsement, just reporting!) Another is that in our instant digital world, being smashed often gets recorded and posted- and that can be forever. It’s not a good look.
The social backlash? Yes, even something as healthful as quitting or reducing drinking has its critics! Accusations that the quitters are much more interested in isolation while consuming digital media than they are with consuming with their pals in real life.
What do you think? Is quitting on track to stay or just
another rebound from the past couple of years?
In this episode, Mettie + Lunah are also testing out the idea of extending Dry January.
