What Makes For A Good Mascara? Hint: 3 Elements

As a beauty product developer, I look at mascara a little differently. I see and know that parts that make the whole.

There are three things that determine how a mascara actually performs: the formula, the brush and the gasket.

These 3 Elements Must Match Up For Optimal Perfromance

First- The formula is where it begins. Different ingredient combinations are developed to create different effects—lengthening, curling, volumizing, building, defining and more.

Second- Then there is the brush. Mascara brushes come in countless shapes, sizes and configurations. Fine or thick. Long or short bristles. Dense or widely spaced. Each design delivers the formula to the lashes differently.

Third- And then there is the often-overlooked gasket—the opening at the top of the mascara component that wipes away a specific amount of product as the brush is pulled out. It is essentially the final delivery mechanism.

I recently tested a commercial mascara from a famous designer. It had an impressively fine brush with short, defined bristles, but the gasket allowed a lot of product through. In my professional opinion, there was a mismatch: a precision brush that was carrying too much product. The gasket was not tight enough. So, the fine brush delivered a great deal of product on the fine surfaces of each brush hair. 

That balance matters.
